David Smyth provides commercial and contract management advisory services to the entire lifecycle of projects in the engineering & construction and maintenance industry sectors.

With a combined engineering and contracts background, David is a seasoned practitioner with more than 35 years of experience in the contract and commercial management of engineering, construction and maintenance projects in a range of countries and jurisdictions including Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and New Zealand as well as Europe and the Middle East. 

This is a career of two parts, firstly and predominately providing advisory services working as the Client’s Representative delivering civil engineering project outcomes and then for the past 25 years working as the Contractor’s Commercial Representative delivering commercial outcomes.

He brings extensive knowledge in all forms of contracts from bespoke standards and hybrids to design and construct and public private partnerships, from tendering through to project completion and handover. His approach is to build strong and sustainable relationships at all levels which then form the basis for a positive commercial framework.

His reputation for successful project delivery is based on building strong working relationships with people through good communication and by providing team training and implementation of robust systems and processes. This facilitates commercial and contract awareness, avoids disputes, and encourages the early resolution of issues.

Having both project delivery and corporate management experience at the highest levels, David applies his specialist contracts, claims, commercial and risk management skills to effectively establish, develop and mentor commercial teams as well as provide governance and strategic direction to project leadership teams.

Throughout his career he has typically interacted closely with the engineering, construction, procurement, maintenance, finance, HR, legal, insurance and the broader project management team and continues to do so to successfully deliver the projects and build long term relationships.
